Alaska and Polar Regions Area Studies Bibliographer and Curator of Rare Books

The University of Alaska  - Fairbanks (UAF) Libraries seeks a creative and energetic subject specialist to develop, manage, and promote print collections and other formats in the Alaska & Polar Regions Collections (APR), one of the world's pre-eminent collections of Alaskana and Arctic/Antarctic materials. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, under the lead of the APR Department Head, the APR Area Studies Bibliographer and Curator of Rare Books identifies, selects and acquires material in print and other formats; works closely with colleagues in APR, at UAF, and in the larger scholarly community to develop services and programs that promote the collections; and, as a member of the faculty, engages in scholarly and service activities to meet tenure expectations.

The Alaska & Polar Regions Collections (APR) houses the world's largest collection of Alaskana and is a leader in Polar research materials, with an emphasis on the Arctic. APR serves a local, national, and international research community with 150,000 monograph and serial volumes; 11,000 rare books and maps; approximately 15,000 linear feet of archives and manuscripts; more than 1,000,000 photographs, approx. 1 million feet of historical moving image footage, and over 10,000 hours of oral history recordings. The department consists of ten units and special projects: archives and manuscripts, oral history (including the Jukebox project), Alaskana and rare books, the Alaska Film Archives, the Alaska & Polar Periodical Index, Alaska's Digital Archives, the digital photo lab, micrographics, the ANSCA project, and the Rasmuson Translation Series project. APR is staffed by 28.25 FTE, including 4 faculty members.

Founded in 1917, UAF is a land-sea-space grant institution and the flagship campus of the University of Alaska system. The on-campus population of approximately 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students includes a high percentage of Alaska Native, Native American, and international students along with a wide variety of other ethnic backgrounds, and a substantial number of non-traditional students, making UAF a richly diverse academic setting. UAF is also home to award-winning affiliates of the Public Broadcasting System and National Public Radio, and the Museum of the North natural history, cultural, and fine arts museum.

Geophysical Institute Library Director

The library is located in the Geophysical Institute/International Arctic Research Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is the most northern special library in the United States that focuses on polar physical sciences. This international collection includes approximately 24,000 journal volumes and 76,000 books and reports, of which over 600 are specialized historical books.

Special collections include; International Northern Sea Route, International Historical
Glaciological Volumes, International Geophysical Year (IGY), Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) and Alaska Department of Transportation Library. The library routinely provides support for approximately 600 local research scientist, staff and students. Scientists, both national and international, are frequent visitors to this unique collection.

This full time term faculty position provides specialized user-centered reference and collection management services to support the research programs in space physics, remote sensing, volcanology, atmospheric sciences, seismology, glaciology, snow, ice and permafrost at this international research facility. Reporting to the Geophysical Institute Director, the librarian is responsible for all aspects of the library, including budget. Candidate should have at least 3 years experience in a special library setting working in reference with scientific research materials and collection development. Participating in national and international library organizations is important in this position for scholarly publishing opportunities and library information networking.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION: PhD or Masters Degree and at least 3 years experience at time of appointment in library science from an institution accredited with the American Library Association is required.
