Jobs in Alaska (MLIS)
Collections and Connections: Engaging our Communities
The Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage is recruiting for an innovative and technologically adept Instruction and Reference Librarian with a strong commitment to user education and services. Both entry-level and experienced librarians are encouraged to apply.
Position Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will serve as instruction, reference, and collection development liaison to the English Department programs and the Creative Writing and Literary Arts programs. Liaisons provide leadership in planning, developing, delivering, and assessing library services for their respective programs. Outreach to academic programs is a significant component of this position.
Instruction and Reference Librarians provide lectures and workshops in library research strategies to classes in their disciplines, as well as instruction for General Education Requirements (GER) and developmental courses. Instruction responsibilities include actively promoting, developing, and delivering face-to-face and distance instruction in various formats. This position participates in a teaching rotation for two credit courses: LS 101 (Library Resources and Information Retrieval) and LS 211 (Library Research in the 21st Century).
Reference work includes traditional and online reference in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, as well as in-depth assistance/research consultation by appointment for liaison areas.
Hours for these activities will include days, nights and weekends.
Collection development activities include collaborating with the Head of Collection Development and other liaisons to build digital and print collections in support of teaching, learning, and research. Responsibilities include selecting materials, reviewing and weeding collections, and seeking opportunities for additional funding for collections.
The Instruction and Reference Services department is comprised of seven faculty librarians and the Head of Instruction and Reference. Each librarian serves as liaison to one or more academic programs. With two computer classrooms in a modern library facility, demand for library instruction sessions has grown significantly. Instruction program development includes the following tools: Blackboard, Elluminate Live!, Flash, Captivate, and Camtasia. Goals for the library instruction program are to enhance and diversify face-to-face and web-based instructional offerings in support of information literacy across the curriculum. Projects planned or underway include: exploration of opportunities for both course-integrated library instruction and culturally relevant teaching methods; a partial redesign of the library’s website to incorporate learning objects at point of need; a redesign of the framework for LS101; and building additional partnerships with academic programs.
This position reports to the Head of Instruction and Reference Services in the Consortium Library and serves on a variety of committees and teams relating to library planning and management.
