Course Title: Raven About Libraries, 2004

Course Objectives:
- The student will be exposed to the latest information for libraries and library automation through readings and presentations of conference speakers;
- The student will consider new ideas for implementation in a relevant library setting;
- The student will implement at least one of the following—a new concept, technology or library resource—in a library setting; and
- The student will report the implementation in a three- to five-page paper.
Class Participation Policy:
Attendance and timely completion of satisfactory written work are the exclusive requirements for successful completion of the course.
Student Attendance Policy:
Students will attend at least 15 hours of activities at the Alaska Library Association Conference. The student must keep a log of activities attended and a journal containing notes taken during those activities. These items must be submitted with the written assignment by April 30, 2004. The student may count any of the pre-conference seminars as part of the required 15 hours. The following activities may also be counted, up to a maximum of two hours each:
- Examination of new materials and technologies in the exhibit area;
- Informal networking with other librarians; and
- Formal networking with other librarians in committee or business meetings.
Make-up Work Policy:
Attendance is mandatory. There is no provision for make-up sessions.
Required Work:
- The student will attend a minimum of 15 hours of conference activities;
- The student will keep a log (list) of the activities attended, including dates and times;
- The student will keep a journal containing notes taken during (or after) each activity attended, including exhibit viewing and networking activities;
- The student will later implement in a library setting an idea, library resource, or technology learned from the conference;
- The student will submit a three- to five-page paper discussing the idea, library resource, or technology that was implemented above.*
* Students not currently working in a library may negotiate alternative assignments with the instructors in order to fulfill this requirement.
