July 8th-10th, 2008  WorldCat Resource Sharing Basics
Online class; 2-4PM each day; $135; 6 hrs. of CE credit available

July 18th, 2008, Free Friday Forum:  FRBR in Brief

Free online class; 10-11AM OR 2-3PM; 1 hr. of CE credit available

Description:
The Final Report on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) has been the subject of much discussion in the library world since it was released in 1998. As a proposed model for bibliographic data it has been utilized by the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA (JSC) in preparing Resource Description and Access (RDA), the cataloging rules planned to replace AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed.). Local system vendors and organizations such as the Library of Congress and OCLC are investigating how FRBR might influence the structures of library catalogs. This one-hour online session will look at the basics of FRBR and explore some of its impact on library catalogs.

July 21st and 22nd in Boise, ID.   This two-day BCR conference entitled “Next Generation ILS: Mashed-Up, Fried or Half-Baked?” costs $125 to register and includes breakfast and lunch for both days.

Description:
There's a lot of chatter about the technology infrastructure that supports the business of libraries. Whether pointing out shortfalls in their system, thinking about open source options, looking to mix and match technologies from different vendors to accomplish different tasks, or simply throwing their hands in the air and saying "What do I do?", everyone is talking about their ILS.

Move beyond your dissatisfaction, join the discussion and help design the future of the ILS. The Next Generation ILS symposium is a forum for open discourse to help focus the current debate. Here's an opportunity to take those mashed-up, fried and half-baked thoughts and frustrations and turn them into a next generation solution that may or may not be an ILS as we know it today.

July 25th, 2008, Free Friday Forum:  Fuel Your Productivity (ILL Management Systems)

Free online class; 10-11AM OR 2-3PM; 1 hr. of CE credit available

Description:
Interlibrary loan is not as simple as it used to be, and a variety of products are now available to improve ILL workflow efficiency. This one-hour online session presents an overview of ILL products currently available for request management (e.g. Clio, OCLC ILLiad, Relais) and document delivery (Arial, Odyssey, Prospero) and looks at what types of environments would benefit from each product. We will also touch on consortia sharing solutions (e.g. AutoGraphics, URSA, VDX) which provide services to groups and consortia.

This workshop will cover the various customization options for the patron interface. Participants will also learn to create links between authorizations, local catalogs, and Open URL services as well as enable deep linking to local catalog records to WorldCat.org. Statistical reports for reference and WorldCat.org will also be covered.
