Around and about
town...and beyond
The Arctic Ocean from Barrow. The darkness low in the sky shows where
there is open water.
 |
It's hard to get across the vast beauty in photos, but hopefully
these will serve as a reminder for those who were there and a taste
for those who couldn't make it this time. |

It may have been cold outside, but we had

Note the skin boat in the yard. Cold weather is important
for making the boats seaworthy. |

Go to the Sessions page to see the
inside of that lovely school soon (sorry, those pictures aren't up
quite yet!). |

Thanks to the North Slope Borough for the FREE shuttle

Arctic Adventures lived up to their name. Thursday's
tours were frigid, but adventurous as our guides navigated wind and
snow drifts. We were thankful for the skilled drivers and radios!
Later tours were warmer and less windy. This may have made for easier
picture-taking, but they couldn't possibly have had more fun! |

| Just beyond the sign, you can just about see the small mounds that
indicate the origins of Barrow, where Native Alaskans lived in underground
homes. Ukpeagvik, the Inupiat name for Barrow, means "place where
owls are hunted." |

If I remember correctly, these buildings
were in support of the DEW line. Does anyone else remember their tour
better? |

 |
| The words are a little bit covered by snow, but they say "Skull

One of the most famous views of Barrow. |
