Around and about town...and beyond

The Arctic Ocean from Barrow. The darkness low in the sky shows where there is open water.

It's hard to get across the vast beauty in photos, but hopefully these will serve as a reminder for those who were there and a taste for those who couldn't make it this time.

Town and pack ice

It may have been cold outside, but we had a wonderfully warm welcome!

The tip of the North Slope Borough

See the blowing snow!

Where did you say you were from?

Downtown Barrow
Daytime
A little later.
Barrow is sometimes sunny ...

... and sometimes not!
Check out the blowing snow

Note the skin boat in the yard. Cold weather is important for making the boats seaworthy.

Traditional boats ...
... and modern ones. All frozen.

Note the furs hanging outside
Schools ...
Barrow High School

Indoor playground at Ipalook Elementary School. There's an outdoor one to match.

Most of the conference took place at Eben Hopson Middle School. Go to the Sessions page to see the inside of that lovely school soon (sorry, those pictures aren't up quite yet!).
One of Barrow's churches

Barrow's cemetery

Our hotels...

Top of the World Hotel across the street from the Arctic Ocean, and Pepe's Restaurant "North of the Border"

The Top of the World

View from Top of the World and Pepe's front door (Some rooms view the Arctic Ocean directly)
Hanging out at Top of the World, Barrow's largest hotel

Airport Inn

Do you have pictures from the Airport Inn or King Eider? Please send them to share!
Out and About
Thanks to the North Slope Borough for the FREE shuttle bus service. Sometimes crowded, but companionable and WARM.

Arctic Adventures lived up to their name. Thursday's tours were frigid, but adventurous as our guides navigated wind and snow drifts. We were thankful for the skilled drivers and radios! Later tours were warmer and less windy. This may have made for easier picture-taking, but they couldn't possibly have had more fun!

Just beyond the sign, you can just about see the small mounds that indicate the origins of Barrow, where Native Alaskans lived in underground homes. Ukpeagvik, the Inupiat name for Barrow, means "place where owls are hunted."

LRRS (Long Range Radar Site) The totem pole was erected by Army staff and is topped by the first flush toilet in Barrow.

If I remember correctly, these buildings were in support of the DEW line. Does anyone else remember their tour better?

The words are a little bit covered by snow, but they say "Skull from bowhead whale"
One of the most famous views of Barrow.
