News and Updates Please check this page regularly to find the most current information, including corrections and changes! May 2, 2005 The registration email address is no longer valid. Please contact David Ongley with any questions related to registration. April 2, 2005 March 3, 2005 Registrations continue to trickle into Barrow. That's great, and I encourage you all to register if you have not already. Because of caterers' deadlines, we cannot guarantee meal registrations received in Barrow after Monday, March 4th. So, if you have not registered already, please fax your registration to 907-852-1729. February 24, 2005 Barrow is a damp community. This means that while you cannot purchase alcohol in Barrow, you may bring a limited amount with you. You are allowed to bring: 1 gallon malt beverages/beer OR Hotels and other housing in Barrow may have more restrictive rules. If you are concerned about this, you may wish to check with your housing facility. February 20, 2005 Psychiatric Drop-In Centers In The New Workplace: Your Local Library - Ron Adler (API), scheduled for Sunday at 11:15, has been cancelled. Unfortunately, we were unable to get a substitute speaker for The Effects of the Patriot Act on Alaskan Libraries, so that is cancelled as well. February 8, 2005 We have just been told that additional seats have been added to flight 145 on March 9th and 146 on March 13th. Seats on these flights should now be the regular cost. See the Travel link for information on obtaining the conference discount. If you haven't done so already, please make your airline reservations to Barrow as soon as possible! February 2, 2005 This year, the conference giveaway will be something new - not a bag or pin! Please be sure to bring a bag (from a previous conference?) to tote around all your essential conference stuff! January 31, 2005 For those who have not yet purchased tickets to Barrow, currently, the Wednesday evening flight into Barrow and the Sunday morning flight out of Barrow are booked tightly enough to make the remaining tickets very expensive (about $720 roundtrip from Anchorage, rather than the normal of about $450). I'm working with Alaska Airlines on alternate solutions, but probably won't know anything definite until late next week. According to Alaska Airlines, this should only be affecting these flights. Other flights into and out of Barrow are not yet tightly booked. If you are at all flexible in your schedule and can take earlier or later flights, please go ahead and book them as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you want to take one of the flights mentioned above and have not yet purchased your ticket, I recommend that you wait about a week, or until another announcement on AkLA-L and here. I cannot guarantee that there will be better fares, but there might be. If you notice much higher than normal fares on other flights, please let me know. You can determine "normal" by trying the same itinerary a week earlier and later. As a reminder, the deadline for early registration is February 4th. To attend this exciting conference at the lowest possible cost, get your registration in soon! January 25, 2005 Orientation For New AkLA Executive Council Members – Colleen Tyrrell, scheduled for Sunday at 8 am, has been cancelled. The ViLDA Show has been renamed Alaska's Digital Archives. It is still scheduled for Sunday at 11:15. January 21, 2005 New Alaskana for Young People - Sue Sherif, scheduled for 11:15 on Sunday, has been cancelled. Mother Moose? Mother Goose? The Path To Early Literacy Through Library Programs For Young Children - Sherri Douglas, Sue Sherif, has been moved from Sunday at 8 am to Sunday at 11:15. We may have a new presenter for The Effects of the Patriot Act on Alaskan Libraries. Watch here for details! January 11, 2005 The 2–3:30 PM time slot on Friday, March 11th, is incorrectly listed as 12-3:30. This affects the following sessions: Advocacy Training, Part 1 January 10, 2005 BASC in the Spotlight is listed in the conference brochure as beginning at 9 am. This preconference session actually begins at 10:30 at the Heritage Center. It should finish at about 2:30.
