9 AM – 5 PM Improving Library Security: Aspects, Problems, and Solutions - Bruce A. Shuman, Ph.D. Hilton Anchorage. Sponsored by the Alaska State Library. Join Dr. Shuman, author of Library Security and Safety Handbook, for a stimulating presentation emphasizing practical and inexpensive solutions to security problems. Shuman will discuss building and equipment security; protecting books and other materials; dealing with threatening or difficult patrons; and protecting electronic library files. You’ll also get a first look at his forthcoming book, Case Studies in Library Security, review fictionalized scenarios, and decide which course of action to take. Includes time for Q and A and discussion. Shuman is notorious for his quirky, offbeat sense of humor. Attendees will learn a great deal of useful information about library security and have a good time learning it! Lunch is on your own. (1)
9 AM - 12:30 PM Grab Attention @ Your Library - Freya Anderson at Hilton Anchorage. Would you like to raise your library’s profile in your community? Are you worried about support for the new addition you’ll need in a few years? Do you sometimes wonder if the work you do is really appreciated? Join ALA and statewide AkLA in the @ your library ™ publicity campaign! Learn how you can take advantage of state and national materials and expertise to raise your library’s profile in the community and have fun doing it. Use the campaign to improve usage, funding and clout. See examples from around the state and country. Be inspired by celebrity promos and free or low cost materials. This session provides highlights of the @ your library ™ campaign, tools, and ideas. (2)
9 AM – 5 PM What To Do When the Genealogist Comes - Peg Thompson, Beverly Sadoski, & Doug McAllister at Z.J. Loussac Public Library. Sponsored by the Anchorage Municipal Libraries.

Three sessions focus on basic sites useful for beginning genealogists. Peg Thompson will present Online Sources for the Most FAQs in Genealogy. CYNDISLIST, USGENWEB, and mailing lists will be discussed. Beverly Sadoski will focus on FAMILYSEARCH, the monolithic site produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Doug McAllister will demonstrate two sites to which Loussac Library subscribes: ANCESTRY and GENEALOGY AND LOCAL HISTORY. There will be plenty of handouts to help you guide your genealogy patron. Lunch is on your own. Check at the registration desk at the Hilton Anchorage for cab sharing arrangements. (3)

2 – 5 PM Anchorage School Libraries Tour - Linda Masterson. Join Linda for a 3-hour bus tour to visit 2 of Anchorage’s newest school libraries: Trailside Elementary, built 2 years ago and the prototype design for 8 other new elementary schools in the District; and Goldenview Middle School, currently in its 5th year. Both are examples of high-tech, dynamic school libraries in action. Board the bus at the Hilton. Coffee and cake will be provided at Golden-view in case you get that "sinking" feeling before dinner! 2 – 5 PM Glacier Brewhouse Brewery Tour - Doug McAllister. Attention all beer lovers! Join Doug for an exciting tour of the Brewhouse, 737 West Fifth Avenue. The one-hour tour will include a description of the beer-making process by one of the brewmasters, with free samples. It promises to be a great time, since Glacier Brewhouse is one of the most popular and busiest breweries in Anchorage and the brewmasters love talking about beer! Gather afterwards for a social get-together and perhaps dinner on your own, before heading to the Opening Reception. Meet in the Hilton lobby at 1:45 to walk to the Glacier Brewhouse. (5)
