OLD BUSINESS: Elections were held for officers for 2001: Chair: Patsy Young; Treasurer: Sue Sherif (for one more year); Secretary: Mollie Bynum; Public Relations: Carol Race. Nicole reported on author visits around the state. Having the funds raised from the conference author visit go through the AkLA treasurer worked well last year in Fairbanks and was a lot less stressful. ($700 went into the AkLA general fund which in turn helps to fund the $500 upfront monies for the next conference author visit.) This year the books were ordered through the Sitka Public Library and the profits will go directly to A2A. Nicole apologized that she was not able to set up a Young Adult Preconference for Sitka. The group thought that possibly Anchorage would be a good site for that and that AkASL might be willing to go in on a joint Young Adult Preconference. The Literacy Council was suggested as a possible partner for the preconference. The group felt that it would be advisable to have an author who would do school visits. Sherri Douglas suggested that the Authors to Anchorage Committee, now a committee of the local AkLA, could be responsible for school visits in Anchorage. The dates for AkLA are March 7-10, 2002 ( the Iditarod starts the week prior.) Several mentioned the A2A web site set up by Ruth Jean Shaw. Patsy will contact Ruth Jean to thank her and ascertain about getting more information on the site. Also, Roz Goodman had mentioned that we possibly could get permission to use something of Rie Munoz's art work to use as a banner and/or on the web page. (Carol Race will pursue) There is a group hoping to set up a Readers' Advisory Roundtable within AkLA and A2A would like to work with them in bringing up adult authors. Suggestions for next year's luncheon would be to invite local authors, one per table, to be our guests. We would just be responsible for paying for the authors' meals. Having some children at the Sitka luncheon was nice and maybe some children from the local site could attend each year. Suggestions for next year's author and/or state author visits were: 1. Bruce Coville (may be in Juneau in the Spring of `02?); 2. Dav Pilkey; 3. Jon Scieszka (visited once in Fairbanks); 4. Chris Crutcher; 8. Richard Peck; 9. Jack Gantos; 10. Sherry Shahan (author of Dashing Through the Snow and Frozen Stiff); 11. Brian Jacques; 12. Christopher Paul Curtis; 13. J.K. Rowling; 14. Debbie Miller (has web site: www.debbiemiller.com); 15. Philip Pullman; 16. Eve Bunting; 17. Joan Bauer; 18. Denise Fleming; 19. Debra Frasier; 20. Joan Steiner (author of Look-Alikes); 21. Will Hobbs (comes to Juneau to kayak); 22. Joseph Slate; 23. Patricia MacLachlan; and 24. Ken Waldman (poet). Storytellers mentioned were: 1. Donald Davis (Palmer in Aug. 01) ; 2. Jim Weiss; 3. Doug Lipman; and 4. Colleen Sutherland. It was suggested that Patsy and Nicole take A2A business cards with them to ALA in San Francisco and visit with publishers at the conference. Patsy will work on contacting Dav Pilkey first.
